Corey Walker, Rising Star Award Winner from the Alabama Symphony Orchestra

Congratulations to Corey Walker, the first recipient of the "Rising Star Award" from the Alabama Symphony Orchestra on September 10, 2010! Corey received a trombone, books and five years of music lessons from a symphony member. Corey's great musical talent was 'discovered' last year by Ms. Garrett in the Music Technology and Band Program at Central Park School. Corey wrote a composition using a keyboard and computer and performed on the trombone with his music. He won 1st Place in Music Composition in the PTA Reflections Program for the City of Birmingham Council of PTA's.

Meaghan Heinrich (Symphony Education Manager) asked Ms. Garrett to choose students to work with Paul Lansky in the Symphony's Composer-in-Residence Project. Corey worked well with the group and demonstrated great talent, potential, and leadership skills. He also performed well at the Alabama Symphony Coffee Concert on May 21, 2010 with the Music Technology Ensemble. As a result, Mrs. Heinrich and Maestro Justin Brown were instrumental in securing funding for an instrument and lessons for Corey, along with creating a new award for talented students to develop their artistry and musicianship towards becoming a professional musician or music educator. We are so proud of Corey, a 2010 graduate and salutatorian from Central Park Elementary School! We wish him the best of luck in middle school and in life!
